Thinking About Removing a Cyst or Lipoma? Here’s What You Should Know
July 16, 2025

Cysts and lipomas are common and typically harmless, but they can become bothersome depending on their size, location, or appearance. If you’ve been thinking about having one removed, you’re not alone. At Pacific Plastic Surgery Group, we regularly perform these procedures and help patients feel more comfortable and confident. Here’s what you should know before scheduling a consultation.
Understanding Cysts and Lipomas
Cysts are fluid-filled sacs that form beneath the skin. They can range in size and are often painless, though they may occasionally become inflamed or infected.
Lipomas are soft, fatty growths that develop under the skin. They are usually benign, painless, and slow-growing. Most lipomas are movable to the touch and can become more noticeable over time.
While both are generally non-cancerous, some patients choose to have them removed for medical or cosmetic reasons.
Why Patients Choose Removal
Patients consider removal for a variety of reasons, including:
- Discomfort or pain: Cysts or lipomas can press on nearby tissues and cause irritation.
- Cosmetic concerns: Some growths may be visible under clothing or in exposed areas such as the face, arms, or neck.
- Infection risk: Cysts in particular may become infected, prompting a need for surgical removal.
- Prevention of recurrence: Surgically removing the entire growth, including its capsule, lowers the likelihood of it returning.
What to Expect During the Procedure
At Pacific Plastic Surgery, the removal process is typically straightforward and performed in-office under local anesthesia. This means you will remain awake, but the area being treated will be completely numb.
During the procedure:
- For cysts, a small incision is made to remove both the cyst and its sac, helping to prevent recurrence.
- For lipomas, the fatty tissue is carefully excised through a small incision, and the area is closed with sutures.
The procedure usually takes less than an hour, depending on the size and location of the growth.
Recovery and Aftercare
Most patients experience a smooth and quick recovery. Here’s what you can expect:
- Mild swelling or bruising is normal and typically resolves within a few days.
- Stitches may be removed in about a week, unless dissolvable sutures are used.
- Daily activities can usually be resumed within a couple of days, though strenuous exercise should be avoided until cleared by your surgeon.
- Scarring is minimal in most cases and will fade over time. Our surgeons take care to place incisions in discreet locations whenever possible.
Risks to Consider
As with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks, although they are rare. These may include:
- Infection at the surgical site
- Scarring
- Recurrence of the cyst or lipoma if not completely removed
Following your aftercare instructions and attending follow-up appointments will help minimize these risks.
