Seborrheic keratoses are very common, benign (non-cancerous) skin growths that often appear as people age. They can look like waxy, rough, or “stuck-on” lesions and may range in color from light tan to dark brown or black. These growths can appear anywhere on the body, most commonly on the face, chest, back, or shoulders.
Although seborrheic keratoses are harmless and do not require medical treatment, many patients choose removal for cosmetic reasons or if lesions become irritated, itchy, or frequently catch on clothing.

See MoreWhat Causes Seborrheic Keratosis?
Although there are no direct causes of seborrheic keratosis, there may be a genetic component meaning it runs in families. Individuals over the age of 50 are more at risk, which has earned this condition the name “wisdom growths.”
Treatment Options for Seborrheic Keratosis
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze and destroy the lesion. Over several days, the treated growth will darken, dry out, and naturally fall off as the skin heals. This treatment is quick and well-tolerated. A topical numbing cream may be applied beforehand to improve comfort.
Electrodissection
Electrodissection uses controlled heat energy delivered through a fine probe to gently remove the lesion. The targeted approach allows for precise treatment while minimizing damage to surrounding skin. This procedure is performed in-office, typically using a topical numbing cream or local anesthetic to ensure comfort.
Erbium Laser Resurfacing
An Erbium laser can be used to carefully vaporize seborrheic keratoses layer by layer. This option allows for highly controlled removal with excellent precision, making it particularly useful for facial lesions or areas where cosmetic outcome is a priority. Healing is typically smooth with minimal downtime. Lesion needs to be checked by Dermatologist prior to treating with laser.
Surgical Excision / Shave Removal
For larger or thicker seborrheic keratoses, a minimally invasive surgical excision or shave technique may be recommended. The lesion is carefully removed using a sterile blade, and local anesthesia is used to ensure a comfortable experience. In some cases, the shave technique allows the lesion to be removed flush with the skin surface, often without the need for stitches.
What to Expect During Treatment
Seborrheic keratosis treatments are performed in-office and are generally quick, ranging from a few minutes to about 30 minutes depending on the number and size of lesions. Your provider will assess your skin and recommend the most appropriate treatment option. Most patients experience minimal discomfort, and numbing options are available when needed.
What to Expect After Treatment
After treatment, it is common to experience mild redness, swelling, or tenderness in the treated area. A small scab or crust may form depending on the method used and typically resolves within 7–14 days. It is important not to pick or scratch the area to support proper healing and reduce the risk of scarring.
Once healed, the skin appears smoother and more even. Treated lesions are permanently removed, although new seborrheic keratoses may develop over time, especially with age or genetic predisposition.
At Pacific Plastic Surgery Group, our team will carefully assess your skin and recommend the most appropriate treatment approach based on the size, number, and location of your seborrheic keratoses, with a focus on safe removal and optimal cosmetic results.
