Seborrheic keratosis is a relatively common skin condition that can be bothersome, especially when multiple growths develop. Because this skin condition develops similarly to actinic keratosis, it is important to have your skin examined by a physician who can accurately diagnose and treat your seborrheic keratosis.

What is Seborrheic Keratosis?

Seborrheic keratosis is a skin condition that causes the growth of benign (noncancerous) skin lesions. These lesions can develop almost anywhere on the body and often have a “stuck-on” appearance with a waxy or scaly texture. They range in color from light tan to black and gradually grow larger if left untreated. Although seborrheic keratosis is not life-threatening, larger lesions may be prone to itchiness, irritation, and bleeding when they rub against clothing. If you have skin growths that develop quickly, this is likely not seborrheic keratosis and should be examined as soon as possible by a dermatologist or physician.

What Causes Seborrheic Keratosis?

Although there are no direct causes of seborrheic keratosis, there may be a genetic component meaning it runs in families. Individuals over the age of 50 are more at risk, which has earned this condition the name “wisdom growths.”

Treatments for Seborrheic Keratosis

We offer several dermatological treatments to safely and effectively remove bothersome seborrheic keratosis growths.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze unwanted growths, causing them to flake off. This treatment is not painful but a topical numbing cream can be applied to keep you more comfortable.

Electrodissection

Electrodissection uses heat energy to burn off skin growths. A small needle with an electrical probe will be used to precisely deliver heat to the affected area so that the surrounding skin is not damaged. This can be performed in-office using a topical numbing cream or local anesthetic.

Surgical Excision

Minimally invasive excision is often needed to successfully remove large seborrheic keratosis. The lesion will be carefully removed and the surrounding skin will be sutured together. This is performed under local anesthesia. Sometimes, a shave technique can be performed to scrape away the lesion, leaving no scars.

Can Seborrheic Keratosis Be Prevented?

Since there are no direct causes of seborrheic keratosis, it is difficult to prevent. However, treatments can stop the growth of these bothersome lesions and relieve discomfort. Multiple treatments may be needed if new skin growths develop.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you get rid of a seborrheic keratosis?

There are several ways, two of my personal favourites are electrocautery and cryotherapy. Healing time is usually within 7-10 days. For large, thick lesions, a shave excision may be most appropriate.

What triggers seborrheic keratoses?

Seborrheic keratoses also have a genetic predisposition. Primary risk factors are getting smarter, older, and wiser!

What happens if a seborrheic keratosis is left untreated?

Seborrheic keratoses are benign and therefore not harmful to your health. They are however a common cosmetic concern to many patients. These sometimes nuisance spots can become itchy, irritated, and can increase in size and number over time.

What foods trigger seborrheic keratosis?

There is no known dietary trigger for seborrheic keratoses.

Will seborrheic keratosis grow back if picked off?

Often, yes.

Is hydrocortisone good for seborrheic keratosis?

Over the counter hydrocortisone topical therapy can be used in short durations to treat any associated inflammation when irritated; it can also help alleviate itch. Topical therapy with hydrocortisone however will not remove/resolve a seborrheic keratosis.
