Sebaceous hyperplasia is a common skin condition for middle-aged and older men and women. This condition causes the development of small skin bumps that are not harmful but may be bothersome in their appearance.
What is Sebaceous Hyperplasia?
Sebaceous hyperplasia is a benign skin condition characterized by tiny skin-colored or slightly brown bumps, sometimes with a dent in the middle. These bumps can develop almost anywhere on the body but are most commonly found on the cheeks, chin, forehead, nose, and chest. Although sebaceous hyperplasia is not dangerous, some people may feel self-conscious about their bumpy skin texture. It is also important to consult with a physician in case your newly developing skin bumps are a sign of another skin condition.

What Causes Sebaceous Hyperplasia?
Sebaceous glands in the skin naturally produce sebum oil, which moisturizes the skin and hair and protects the skin from free radicals in the environment. Sebaceous glands are found in the pores of your skin and they often surround hair follicles. If these glands are clogged, the hair follicles become enlarged, leading to the development of sebaceous hyperplasia.
Treatments for Sebaceous Hyperplasia
The following treatments can successfully remove sebaceous hyperplasia and restore smooth, unblemished skin:
Shave Excision
The shave technique utilizes a surgical scalpel to carefully scrape off the sebaceous hyperplasia bumps so that the affected area is flush with the surrounding skin. Local anesthesia will be used so you will not feel any pain.
Electrodissection
Electrodissection uses a tiny needle with an electrical probe to destroy the sebaceous hyperplasia with targeted heat. A scab will form over the treated area and flake off after a few days.
Cryotherapy
Cryotherapy uses liquid nitrogen to freeze sebaceous hyperplasia bumps, causing them to fall off the skin. Patients will feel an intense cold sensation during the procedure but it is not considered painful.
Can Sebaceous Hyperplasia be Prevented?
Although it is difficult to prevent sebaceous hyperplasia, the risk of developing it can be lowered. Exfoliating skincare products like retinol and salicylic acid can be used to unclog the pores and strip away excess oil. Excess sun exposure has also been linked to sebaceous hyperplasia development, so it is important to protect your skin with broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher.
