Liposuction / Body Contouring Surgery in Vancouver

Liposuction surgery removes excess fat from areas on the body that are problematic and sometimes resistant to diet and exercise. During this surgery, a device known as a “cannula” is inserted under the skin and is used to help loosen and remove fat. Our surgeons commonly perform liposuction on the abdomen, hips, upper arms and thighs. Liposuction is frequently performed in combination with other surgical procedures, such as abdominoplasty, thigh lift, and brachioplasty.

The surgeons at Pacific Plastic Surgery Group are highly rated liposuction / body contouring surgeons in Vancouver with extensive clinical experience in cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery. Personalized, high quality care are the founding principles of our practice. Our team is dedicated in helping you realize your aesthetic goals.

The Surgical Experience

Liposuction is performed under general anaesthesia in an accredited surgical facility. It is considered an outpatient procedure. On average, each body part (i.e. tummy, thighs, etc.) will take 30 -60 minutes to complete. After surgery, patients must wear a compression garment on the treated area for 6 weeks. Bruising and swelling will dissipate after 1-2 weeks, but the final result will take several months to appear. The scars associated with liposuction are usually small and will fade over time.

FAQs

  • Is Liposuction safe?

Current liposuction techniques are much safer and more predictable than ever before, but surgeon skill still remains the number one factor when researching this procedure. The goal is to attain a natural and smooth result. An experienced surgeon will be able to provide this outcome. This procedure is performed in an accredited non-hospital facility, with safety is the highest priority.

  • Is the result permanent?

Yes, and No. The good news is that at cells that are removed during liposuction do not come back if the patient’s weight remains stable. However, if a patient gains substantial weight following surgery, the remaining cells can expand (or even multiple). Patients are encouraged to adhere to a healthy diet and exercise program both before and after surgery to maintain their results years after surgery.

  • How much fat can be removed at one time?

The amount of fat removed really depends on the size of the patient and their aesthetic goals. From a safety standpoint, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons recommends that 5000 cc (5 litres) of fat or less be removed at one time as an outpatient. High-volume liposuction (over 5 litres) is high risk, and is discouraged by our surgeons.

  • What if I have loose skin?

Liposuction is a surgery that removes fat and enhances the actual shape of the body. It does not address skin imperfections caused by sagging skin or cellulite under the skin. During your consultation, a discussion will be had regarding adjunct procedures, which address and improve skin texture. If there is substantial looseness of the skin, liposuction is frequently combined with additional procedures, such as abdominoplasty, thigh lift, neck lift, and brachioplasty surgeries.

  • What areas of the body can be treated with liposuction?

Liposuction can target various areas, including the abdomen, thighs, hips, buttocks, arms, back, and neck. It can also be used to contour smaller areas, such as under the chin or around the knees.

  • Is liposuction a good weight-loss method?

Liposuction is not a weight-loss method. It’s a body contouring procedure designed to remove stubborn fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise. It’s most effective for individuals who are close to their ideal weight but want to refine specific areas.

  • How long is the recovery time for liposuction?

Recovery time varies depending on the extent of the procedure and individual healing factors. Generally, patients can expect to return to light activities within a week, while more strenuous activities should be avoided for 4-6 weeks. Full recovery may take a few months, with swelling gradually subsiding during this period.

  • What are the risks and side effects of liposuction?

As with any surgical procedure, liposuction carries risks, including infection, bleeding, and reactions to anesthesia. Potential side effects include bruising, swelling, numbness, and contour irregularities. Rare but serious complications can include deep vein thrombosis, organ puncture, or fluid accumulation.

  • How much fat can be safely removed during liposuction?

The amount of fat that can be safely removed varies based on the patient’s health and the area being treated. Typically, no more than 5 liters (approximately 11 pounds) of fat should be removed in one session to minimize risks and ensure patient safety, as per Health Canada guidelines.
