Smooth, Clear Skin Starts With Safe Seborrheic Keratosis Removal
July 16, 2025

Seborrheic keratosis is a common skin condition that many people experience, especially as they get older. These growths are non-cancerous and benign, but they can feel rough or waxy and vary in color from tan to dark brown or even black.
While not harmful, seborrheic keratoses can be irritating, especially if they are in visible areas or become itchy or inflamed. At Pacific Plastic Surgery Group, we offer safe and effective treatment options to remove these growths and help restore smooth, healthy-looking skin.
What is Seborrheic Keratosis?
Seborrheic keratoses are raised skin growths that can look like warts or scabs and may feel rough or scaly. They form when skin cells build up on the surface and become thicker than the surrounding skin. They can appear anywhere on the body and come in many sizes. While they are not dangerous, they can cause discomfort when rubbed by clothing or when located in high-friction areas. Some people also choose to remove them for cosmetic reasons.
Reasons to Consider Removal
Although seborrheic keratoses are benign, you might choose to have them removed for one or more of the following reasons:
- You are bothered by the appearance of the growths
- They itch or become irritated from clothing or jewelry
- They are located in an area that causes discomfort
- They begin to change in color, size, or shape
- They are frequently mistaken for something more serious
At Pacific Plastic Surgery Group, we offer two safe and effective treatment options. The best one for you will be discussed during your consultation.
Liquid Nitrogen Treatment
Cryotherapy using liquid nitrogen is one of the most commonly used treatments for seborrheic keratosis.
How it works: A small amount of liquid nitrogen is applied to the growth, freezing the abnormal skin cells. Over time, the treated area will scab and fall off naturally.
Benefits:
The treatment is quick and does not involve cutting or stitches
Most patients tolerate it well with only mild discomfort
It is an excellent option for smaller or early-stage growths
Recovery:
You may see redness or mild swelling after treatment. A scab will form and fall off in one to two weeks. Avoid tight clothing or anything that might rub the area while it heals.
Laser Resurfacing Treatment
Laser resurfacing is another effective method used for larger or more persistent growths.
How it works: A precise medical laser targets the keratosis and vaporizes the thickened skin. The treatment does not damage the healthy skin surrounding the area.
Benefits:
- Highly targeted treatment
- Effective for larger or clustered growths
- Minimal damage to surrounding skin
Recovery:
The treated area may look red and swollen immediately after the procedure. A scab will form and should be kept moisturized as it heals. Most patients recover fully within seven to ten days. Like with cryotherapy, you should avoid anything that might irritate the area during healing.
What to Expect After Treatment
No matter which method is used, you can expect the treated area to scab or crust over and fall off within one to two weeks. Healing is usually quick and straightforward with very little discomfort. Following your post-treatment instructions carefully will help support good healing and minimize any scarring or irritation.
