Which Type of Tummy Tuck Is Right for Me?

February 28, 2022

A tummy tuck, also known as Abdominoplasty, tightens and reshapes the abdominal area, helping to achieve a more aesthetically pleasing, slimmer overall appearance. Having a flatter, firmer midsection can dramatically improve the way clothing fits and looks, helping you feel more confident and comfortable in your body.

During the procedure, the abdominal muscles are tightened, and excess, sagging skin is eliminated, correcting a protruding belly and leaving the midsection flatter and better toned. Liposuction is frequently combined with Abdominoplasty to provide a smooth contour.

Did you know that there are multiple types of tummy tucks? Every patient has their unique aesthetic goals and desired outcomes of treatment. Our surgeons will recommend the type of tummy tuck surgery that will achieve your goals and minimize any concerns you have about scarring and creating a natural look.

Types of Tummy Tucks

1) Full Tummy Tuck

A Full or Standard Tummy Tuck is designed to improve both the upper and lower abdomen. Patients who have weakened abdominal muscles due to previous pregnancy, or excessive skin around their midsection may consider a Full Tummy Tuck to flatten and contour the areas above and below their belly buttons.

2) Mini Tummy Tuck

Unlike a Full Tummy Tuck, the Mini Tummy Tuck addresses only the lower abdomen (the area below the belly button). Patients who are concerned by a small “pooch”, loose skin or stretch marks below their belly button may want to consider this procedure.

3) Extended Tummy Tuck

Extended Tummy Tuck, or Extended Abdominoplasty, as the name suggests, is a more extensive form of regular Tummy Tuck. An extended Tummy Tuck removes excess tissue and skin not only from the front but also from the sides (flanks) of the lower and mid-abdomen. This can be an effective treatment for patients that have lost a substantial amount of weight and are looking to refine the contours of their body.

4) Drainless Tummy Tuck

A Drainless Tummy Tuck is one that does not involve using plastic drains after surgery. This eliminates the need to empty and maintain the drains while they are in place and eliminates the risk of a drain site infection. It also makes the recovery significantly more comfortable. Ask Dr. Demianczuk if you are a good candidate for a drainless tummy tuck.

Combining Liposuction with a Tummy Tuck procedure is common and can be beneficial for patients that want to tackle stubborn body fat simultaneously with eliminating loose skin and repairing muscle tissue.

Along with your cosmetic goals, the condition of your abdomen prior to a tummy tuck is key in determining the right approach for you.
