What Is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reshape and alter the appearance of the nose to improve its aesthetic appeal and/or nasal function. This procedure can address various concerns relating to the nose, including correcting nasal asymmetry, refining the size or shape of the nose, adjusting the nasal tip or bridge, and improving breathing difficulties caused by structural issues. Rhinoplasty is highly individualized, and the surgical approach can be tailored to the unique needs and anatomy of each patient. Whether seeking cosmetic enhancement or functional improvement, nasal surgery offers a personalized solution to achieve a more harmonious and balanced facial appearance.
Who Is a Candidate for Rhinoplasty?
Ideal candidates for rhinoplasty include individuals who are dissatisfied with their noses’ size, shape, or symmetry, whether due to genetic factors, trauma, or aging. They may also experience functional issues such as breathing difficulties caused by nasal structural abnormalities like a deviated septum. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure, and must stop smoking for 2-6 weeks before and after surgery and after surgery (depending on recommendations from the surgeon). A consultation with one of the board-certified plastic surgeons at Pacific Plastic Surgery Group is the best way to determine your candidacy.
Rhinoplasty Results and Recovery
After surgery, patients will wear a nose splint and will experience bruising and swelling around the nose and eyes. Once the bandages and splint are removed, the nose will look normal but swollen, and it may take longer for the bruising and swelling to subside completely. It can take up to a full year for the nose to gain its final contour and softness. It’s essential for patients to carefully follow post-operative instructions provided by their surgeon, including avoiding strenuous activities and protecting the nose from accidental trauma. While individual experiences may vary, most patients can return to work and light activities within a week, with full recovery achieved within a few months. Ultimately, rhinoplasty can yield long-lasting improvements in nasal aesthetics and function, enhancing overall facial harmony and boosting self-confidence.

Rhinoplasty Procedure
Rhinoplasty is performed under general anesthesia in an accredited surgical facility and typically takes around 2-3 hours to complete. It is considered an outpatient procedure as you will be able to return home the same day as your procedure.
There are two main rhinoplasty techniques, including closed rhinoplasty and open rhinoplasty. During a closed rhinoplasty, your surgeon will begin by making incisions inside the nostrils. To achieve an open rhinoplasty, an incision is made across the columella or nasal septum (the strip of tissue between the nostrils) to access the underlying nasal structures.
Depending on the desired outcome, the surgeon may remove or reshape nasal bones, cartilage, or nasal tissues to achieve the desired nasal shape and size. Cartilage grafts may be utilized to add volume or support, and the nasal skin is re-draped over the modified nasal structure. Once the desired changes are made, the incisions are closed, and a splint may be applied to support the nose during the initial healing phase.
Cost
Rhinoplasty is a tailored surgery; thus, the cost will vary depending on the patient’s aesthetic goals and any functional corrections that need to be made. Some procedures involve just the bone, while others involve cartilage reconstruction.
